The Process Of Becoming A Doctor

When one watches television shows like House or Grey’s Anatomy and thinks that it is similar to real life medical practice, they may convince themselves that becoming a doctor is filled with exciting or mysterious procedures. While there are plenty of moments that reveal the complexities of the human body, becoming a doctor is a very demanding process — though ultimately a very rewarding one. The average salary of a doctor who has graduated from medical school is six figures, making it one of the best-paying jobs for any degree, though the workload required to attain the title of doctor is significant.

An undergraduate degree is required prior to starting medical school. There are some universities that offer an all-purposes pre-med degree, while others do not. Graduates of life sciences will have the best chance of being accepted to medical school: biology and biochemistry are the two best majors to have for becoming a doctor. These require intense memorization (a useful tool for future doctors) and understanding of certain biological processes.

Upon graduation from a university, the first year of medical school is spent introducing students to the terminology of the body and the details about human functions that they will need to be aware of. This includes everything from memorizing all the bones in the body to knowing how each organ system within the chest cavity contributes to metabolism and homeostasis. First-year students have an intensive final exam and then move on to their practicals.

In the second year, students begin to put their lessons into place. Medical schools will have second-year students operate on cadavers, removing and identifying organs as well as performing sutures and stitches as they would for a living patient. Much of the second year is also spent studying specific diseases, conditions, causes, and cures: this knowledge must be encyclopedic, meaning that the exam at the end of the second year can cover any of the thousands of ailments of the human body.

In the third year of med school, a student goes on various rotations. These include psychology, family medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, radiology, and dermatology. Student work closely with preceptors in order to apply their lessons to real-life patients: they are expected to compose themselves and work with patients in the exact manner that a professional would. They have some exams, but are graded by their preceptor according to their proficiency and competency. The fourth year is spent in the rotation of the student’s specialty, honing their skills for their choice of medical career. At that point, medical students will graduate and take their certification exams. Should they pass, they are official doctors and can practice medicine in whatever area they are certified in.

The process is not over, however, as a three or more year residency in a hospital or clinic is necessary to find employment. The first year is called an internship. During this year an intern is relied upon for practically everything, operating as a go-between for doctors and patients and getting real-life experience without the aid of preceptors or supervisors. During these three years, you will be getting to know your specialty and getting hands on experience in it. The hands on experience is often supplemented with lectures and conferences. If you choose to go into a sub-specialty, you may continue onto a fellowship after the residency. Residency is the first time a medical student is paid for his work.

After you have completed your residency, you are ready to become a licensed physician. Although you can technically become licensed in many states after only one year of residency, it is most common to wait until your residency period is over.

Should you choose to then become Board Certified (not required, but can be helpful), you will need to have completed a residency as well as complete an oral and written exam about the specialty.

  • A baccalaureate, masters or doctoral degree awarded from a U.S. accredited college or university
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 in the required pre-requisite courses

Differences and Similarities Between DO and MD

Many people do not realize that there are actually two different types of physicians which are licensed to practice in the United States, these are Osteopathic physicians and Allopathic physicians. Osteopathic physicians graduate from medical school with a D.O. degree and Allopathic physicians graduate with an M.D. degree.

Both of these physicians are fully qualified to diagnose and treat illness, perform surgery, and prescribe medicine in the US. But, then, what are the similarities and the differences between the two?

Similarities Between Allopathic Physicians and Osteopathic Physicians:

  • Prior to attending a medical school which offers either degree, applicants must have obtained a four-year degree with specific science requirements (usually biology, chemistry and organic chemistry are required among others).
  • Each has to go through four years of medical school, where they learn basic medical sciences.
  • After obtaining the degree, they each go through a residency which may last between two and six years, where they choose and learn their specialty.
  • They both have to pass comparable licencing exams.

Although both D.O.s and M.D.s can work as general practitioners or specialists, osteopathic schools generally emphasize primary care training. The subjects taught in the two school types are quite similar as well.

One of the only differences being that in an osteopathic school, the students will learn about Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, which is a method of using the hands to manipulate the spine and joints to relieve pain or reduce other symptoms.

Another difference between the two programs is that they take different exams while in medical school. Allopathic doctors take the USMLE exam, while osteopathic doctors take the COMLEX exam.

Both types of doctors need to take the Hippocratic oath, but D.O.s also take an additional oath to uphold and maintian the core pronciples of osteopathic medicine, these include:

  1. The body is a unit, and the person represents a combination of body, mind and spiri.
  2. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
  3. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
  4. Rational treatment is based on an understanding of these principles: body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.

Osteopathic medicine was developed in 1874 by Dr. A.T. Still. He felt that, at the time, many of the medications given to patients were not helpful and may even be harmful. He believed that the muscooskeletal system was the key to good health.

August 1 is the deadline for early decision applicants.

BIOLOGY: This requirement may be fulfilled by one semester of cellular biology with lab and one semester of organismic biology with lab. Survey courses in anatomy and physiology cannot be substituted for this requirement.
CHEMISTRY: This requirement would ordinarily be met by a one-year course in general inorganic chemistry with lab and a one-year course in organic chemistry with lab. The course in organic chemistry should cover all of the major categories of organic compounds.
PHYSICS: A one-year course in general physics with lab, including mechanics, electricity, heat, light and sound, is required of all applicants. Specialized courses in subdisciplines cannot be substituted for any part of this requirement.
MATHEMATICS: Entering medical students must have at least one year of mathematics at the college level or one semester of calculus(Calculus is recommended).
ENGLISH: Prospective medical students are encouraged to take English courses beyond the one-year minimum requirement. Additional courses designed to increase speed and comprehension are suggested, for slow readers.

Alabama has a total of 61 colleges and universities. Of these, two have schools of medicine. These are the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Southern Alabama.

The University of Alabama School of Medicine

This medical school is a public institution located in Birmingham, AL. They additionally have branch campuses in Huntsville and at the University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences in Tuscaloosa, AL.

This medical school’s history can be traced back to 1859 when it was founded as the Medical College of Alabama in Mobile, AL. In the early 1900′s, the school was moved to Tuscaloosa, so it would be closer to the Uof A. In 1945, the school was moved to Birmingham and the University of Alabama’s Medical Center was founded.  In 1966, the medical school was joined with an existing extension center and together became the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The UAB School of medicine offers a regular M.D. degree as well as a M.D. specializing in Rurual Medicine, a M.D./P.H.D. which is a Medical Scientist Training Program, a M.D./M.P.H (Masters of Public Health), M.D./M.S.P.H (Master of Science in Public Health in Clinical Research), and a B.S./M.D.

This medical school is currently ranked #30 nationally in research and #10 nationally in primary care in the US News and World Report.

Also in the US News and World Report, five medical specialties at UAB are ranked in the top 20 nationally: AIDS is ranked 4th, Women’s Health is ranked 8th, Internal Medicine is ranked 18th, Geriatrics is ranked 19th, and Pediatrics is ranked 19th.

In NIH funding, there are eight deparments in the UAB School of Medicine that rank in the top ten. In the top five are: Anatomy/Cell Biology ranks #1, Surgery ranks #2, Obstetrics/Gynecology ranks #3, and Physical Medicine ranks # 4.
