There are currently four medical schools in New Jersey, three of them under the umbrella of the same university: the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, better known as UMDNJ. These three medical schools are: New Jersey Medical School, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and the School of Osteopathic Medicine. The fourth is brand new, so there isn’t too much information about it yet: Cooper Medical School at Rowan University.

New Jersey Medical School

UMDNJ’s New Jersey Medical School is located in Newark, NJ.

New Jersey Medical School-Degrees Offered:

NJMS offers the MD degree. They also offer several dual degree programs: MD/MBA, MD/MPH, MD/PhD, MD with Thesis.

New Jersey Medical School-Important Admissions Information:

Applications should be submitted via AAMCAS.

The following course work is required for admission:

Biology 8 semester hours including laboratory, exclusive of botany and invertebrate zoology
Chemistry 16 semester hours including laboratory, 8 in general or inorganic chemistry and 8 in organic chemistry
English 6 semester hours
Physics 8 semester hours including laboratory

Robert Wood Johnson Medical School

UMDNJ’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is located in New Brunswick, NJ.

Robert Wood Johnson Medical School-Degrees Offered:

Robert Wood Johnson offers the MD degree.

RWJ offers accelerated acceptance programs with graduate of post-baccalaureate courses at the following schools: Rutgers University, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, Bryn Mawr College, New York University, Drexel University, and Lasalle University.

They also offer a BS/MD program with Rutgers University.

An MD/PhD is offered with Rutgers University an Princeton University. Students accepted into this program receive tuition remission and a stipend.

An MD/JD is offered with Rutgers University-Camden and Seton Hall University.

An MD/MPH is offered in conjunction with Rutgers University.

An MD/MBA is offered in conjunction with Rutgers University.

An MD/MS in Biomedical Informatics is offered in conjunction with New Jersey Institute of Technology.

An MD/MS in Jurisprudence in Health and Law Policy is offered in conjunction with Seton Hall Law School.

UMDNJ’s School of Osteopathic Medicine is located in Stratford, NJ.

School of Osteopathic Medicine-Degrees Offered:

This school offers the DO degree as well as the combine DO/PhD, DO/JD and DO/MPH.

School of Osteopathic Medicine-Important Admissions Information:

Applications should be submitted via AACOM.

The following course work is required for admission:

  • eight hours of biology,
  • eight hours of organic chemistry,
  • eight hours of inorganic chemistry, and
  • eight hours of physics (all with laboratories).
  • Additionally applicants should have:
    • three hours of English composition are required and three additional hours from the English department,
    • six hours of college level mathematics are required,three hours of which may be satisfied by computer science or statistics, and
    • six hours of behavioral science (psychology, sociology or cultural anthropology)
