Mississippi has a total of 32 colleges and universities. Of these, two have medical schools. These are the University of Mississippi Medical School, which offers an M.D. degree, and the William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine, which offers a D.O. degree.

University of Mississippi Medical School

The University of Mississippi medical school in located in Jackson, Mississippi and is the only provider of M.D. degrees in the state, They are also the sole providers of dental , physical therapy and others.

University of Mississippi Medical School- Degrees Offered

The University of Mississippi Medical center offers the M.D. degree as well as a combined M.D./P.H.D. Degree. They also offer a combined Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) and M.D. program.

Students must apply through the AMCAS system. Applications are due in October, but begin being accepted in June and interviews are scheduled to begin in September.

Math: Three semester hours of college algebra and three semester hours of trigonometry are required.

English: Six semesters of English composition or literature is required.

The William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine

William Carey is the second medical college in Mississippi. It is the first in the area to offer Osteopathic medicine. It was founded very recently, in 2008.

William Carey offers the D.O. degree.  They also offer a Master’s of Biological Sciences degree for those interested in strengthening their medical school applications.

English: 6 credit hours of composition or literature

Chemistry: 8 credit hours

Organic Chemistry: 8 credit hours
