Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences

Uniformed Services University is located in Bethesda, MD. This is a school which caters to military doctors. The curriculum is unique in that it focuses on battle-issues, tropical diseases, disaster medicine, and public health.

As an added benefit: The tuition and fees for enrollment in the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine is covered by each student’s parent service. Students also receive the full salary and benefits of a second lieutenant or ensign throughout all four years of school.

In exchange for a tuition-free education, students commit to serving at least seven years in the uniformed service after graduation, internship and residency are complete.

The program at USU operates year round, and ends up being 700 hours longer than traditional medicine programs. This is due to the emphasis on military medicine and public health.

Ohio Medical Schools

There are a lot of colleges in Ohio, there are also a lot of medical schools. Most of the states I have analyzed have between one and four medical schools. Ohio has six! Five of them offer the MD degree: Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Northeast Ohio University of Medicine, Ohio State University College of Medicine, Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University, University of Toledo College of Medicine, and Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine

Case Western University is located in Cleveland, Ohio. Case Western Medical School was founded in 1843!

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine-Degrees Offered:

Case Western offers the MD degree in three different and distinct tracks: the College track, the University track, and the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) track (which ends up with a MD/PhD).

The University track is a four year program which aims to build physician-scholars. The students in this program are able to obtain a second degree including: Master of Arts in BioEthics, Master’s of Public Health, Master of Science in Applied Anatomy, Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering, Master of Science in Biomedical Investigation, or Ph.D. in Health Services Research.

The College track seeks to build physician-investigators. This is a five-year program in which the student graduates with an MD with Special Qualifications in Biomedical Research.  These students additionally are able to obtain a second degree from the list above.

Last is the MSTP track. This is an eight year program which ends with getting an MD and a PhD. This is an NIH funded program, meaning most students will have their education subsidized.

Ohio University offers the only DO degree in Ohio. This school is located in Athens, Ohio.

They are one of only five schools in the country that offer a combined DO/PhD degree. This degree also includes a stipend as well as tuition remission for the latter years of the program.

There is only one medical school in Indiana, it is Indiana University School of Medicine. This school offers the MD degree. If you are looking to get a DO degree, you will have to look out of state. This school also has a policy of accepting only Indiana residents. Others can get in, but it is rare.
